Life can seem complex and demanding.  Forty (40) million people between the ages of 18 to 54 years, experience high levels of anxiety - National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). and according to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2011-2012, more 2.6 million, U.S. children age 6-17 years were diagnosed with anxiety or depression.  Anxiety can be recognized by feelings of fear or worry; anxiety often exists along with other physical or mental health conditions.  A chronic form of anxiety can be evident around age 11 years, and separation anxiety can happen as early as 5 to 7 years of age.

Some level of anxiety is both healthy and expected, given the social and academic demands of school, as well as navigating personal and family situations. But when a child experiences chronic high levels of anxiety, concerns related to other physical and mental health issues become evident.

Individuals (children and adults) with chronic high levels of anxiety:

  • Often feel nervous in many social situations
  • Have difficulty managing pressure
  • Are often self-critical workaholics or students
  • Are more often nervously-sick
  • Exhibit erratic emotional behaviors or up and down relationships
  • Question their own ability to make healthy decisions
